I’m over the X-Men. Please, tell me I’m wrong, but I’m not feeling it. It isn’t easy to say as the franchise has been one of my all-time favorites. But I’m over it. Here is why.
My issue is with Krakoa. It takes all the conflict away from the story. It is a “utopia” where all the drama has no real impact. They die. They are reborn. The story hints there is something sinister under the surface, but the threat is just a dot far off on the horizon. They keep printing books but nothing happens. It is a city council meeting. It isn’t a good comic. I want a fight or some action. I don’t care for the Trail of Magneto unless they have an option a trial by combat. Please trial by combat!
My next issue is a pet peeve of mine. It is all about the writing. All great stories have conflict. It is the essential journey of a hero. Without the struggle, the protagonist will never grow. My peeve is when a writer wants more conflict and just throws more characters into the story. I feel this is all the new series of X-men comics are doing. The Amazing Spider-Man Nick Spencer run is guilty of the same thing.
The X-Men have a very large cast of characters to pull from. I find this difficult to follow. This is my own personal preference, but with so many people it is hard to develop much of anything. There are exceptions, but The Way of X falls short.
With Way of X, it took about 5 books before the real plot was revealed. Then it was interrupted by the Hellfire Gala. Please tell me why the fuck I should care about a bunch of supers getting dressed up and getting drunk. It is a soap opera. I feel like Marvel is wasting my time. The story is not progressing. The art is cool. I admit that, but there is so much good writing out there, why should I settle for this mediocrity?
I’m still hoping that some good stories are to come. But for my dollar, I’m going to invest in books I enjoy. For the X-Men, I might pick up a few choice graphic novels or stick to the online unlimited options.
If you have any recommendations, please drop them in the comments. Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me I’m just being dramatic. Or are you morning with me?
